ROBLOX'S MOST DISASTROUS "EGG HUNT": A RETROSPECTIVE

GHOSTBRIMSTONE; 2025/07/18

so, THE HATCH (ROBLOX's most recent event, which they advertised similarly 2 an egg hunt) ended around a week ago. it has become ROBLOX's most notorious and poorly-received event ever, beating out previous record holder MOUNTAINEERS (which was broken 2 the point it was unplayable) as the lowest-rated official event game of all time.

this blog post is a bit late, as i have been extremely busy over the past few days (i am currently typing this in the basement of a house in LONDON on my shitty old laptop with the broken screen) and thus did not have the time. either way, i plan 2 summarize the context around why THE HATCH is so controversial and detail my own experiences with the event.

OVERVIEW

THE HATCH has had a rough history. a dev hunt with 1000 games is bad enough, but the event became a PR nightmare several weeks before its release due 2 the discovery of infamous soft condo creator THEOFFICIAITEDDY as a participant. players started vowing not 2 participate in the event, with hashtags such as #BoycottTheHatch trending on sites like TWITTER, and hundreds of games (including big names like PRESSURE, PIGGY, REGRETEVATOR, WELCOME TO BLOXBURG, and FORSAKEN, among others) dropped out, sinking the game total from 1000 to around 400 or so. many of these developers had additional reasons for pulling out (such as how ROBLOX was handling the event, and rumors of AI usage in the game thumbnail and egg designs), but TEDDY being in the event was the primary catalyst for the mass exodus we witnessed. ROBLOX pulled TEDDY from the event, but did not terminate him until KREEKCRAFT threatened not 2 play the event on stream unless he was barred from the platform.

as soon as the event hub released, it was dislike-bombed 2 hell and back, eventually attaining a rating of 21%, the lowest final score of any event game, and only being beat out by GUCCI GARDEN for the lowest score on an event game ever recorded (15%). GUCCI GARDEN, however, currently sits at 33% due 2 its reintroduction of limiteds.

that is about all the context one could need as 2 why this event is as hated as it is. however, i am convinced it would still be widely disliked even if these issues had never arisen. my reasoning is evident below.

THE EVENT ITSELF

disregarding the controversy surrounding it, how was the event itself?

well, it was bad. did you really expect otherwise?

one of the only positive things i have 2 say about this event - the map is gorgeous. as much as i loathe ERYTHIA (for reasons i will not get in2 now), TWIN ATLAS always makes really good maps.

my favorite part of the map is probably the DARK biome. i really like how this looks and wish it wasn't wasted on such a shitty event.

the game selection in this event was absolutely abysmal. lots of low-quality rubbish designed 2 attract young children and get them 2 bring out their parent's credit card. there were a couple respectable games in the mix, but the vast majority of it was terrible (image here courtesy of TOMMOTHEWHATEVER on DISCORD; i didn't take any large screenshots of the game selection screen).

RETROSTUDIO definitely had the best event i played. i had 2 do it on mobile which dampened the experience but it was genuinely amazing. look at this. it's beautiful. i wish this package was real.

the quests were arduous and unfriendly 2 those who didn't have much free time. the ADEPT FUSIONIST quests specifically took hours upon hours of collecting and trading 2 complete, and i only finished them all a mere 18 minutes before the final MERGE MANIA (an event that would make it less costly 2 merge eggs) ended. i was so desperate i was getting on alternate accounts i hadn't used in literal years just 2 gamble for more commons.

there was also the fact that the "SOMETHING IS COMING" quests were required for the SUPER EGGS. the first three required you 2 get eggs of certain elements while the final one required you complete every other quest. not fun 2 do when you're on a time crunch and a completely different continent with only an IPAD and a MACBOOK at your disposal.

after that torture came the ULTIMATE EGG event. it was an event where you had 2 "feed the egg" by collecting commons of different biomes and donating them 2 the giant egg near spawn. it was spoofed - the event was on a 24-hour timer and the counter didn't even finish before the reward became available (the footage linked is low-quality but it's all i could be assed 2 pull up - i did not record myself, all credit goes 2 the uploader).

THE PRIZES

the event prizes get their own category as there are a lot of them.

the BIOME EGGS suck. they're tiny, they float awkwardly around your character, and they take up literally every accessory slot, making styling them as a set with other hats impossible.

the non-egg prizes are actually fairly decent, and while they have egg theming i feel as if they simply do not fit in an egg hunt environment.

also yes, the belt stretches weirdly on 1.0. it isn't an issue with my specific r6 converter, i tested it and it still looked weird on standard 1.0.

additionally, the paid recolors of these are very hit-or-miss. they aren't the standard piss recolors, but some of them still look very rough.

the basket you get from collecting every egg is not bad either.

the SUPER EGG prizes are... not great. i do not like these. the hat is weirdly tilted, the front accessory doesn't work as a front accessory, and the egg hat and shoulder accessory are just kind of mediocre.

the SHELLMETS are alright. they combine in a similar manner 2 the metaverse valk from that one shitty egg hunt-esque event a few years back.

the FLARED UP GEODE is a bit of an underwhelming final prize, but hey, at least it's an egg...?

and finally we have the CONE OF CONNECTION, which i almost forgot existed. why is it a waist accessory? this could have easily been made a gear. and what's with the extremely awkward placement?

THE AFTERMATH; CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

there isn't really anything more for me 2 say. THE HATCH was thoroughly disappointing, and i fear it will only get worse from here. i am starting 2 understand why some people miss 2016 ROBLOX so much, because even though 2016 had its own host of problems it still felt like ROBLOX cared about its community 2 some degree. it is crystal-clear that ROBLOX has stopped caring, and everything happening as of late has been alienating its average userbase in favor oif investors and profit.

peace, love, unity, respect, responsibility,
